Work History
2002-2005:
Director and Proprietor of Spiritt Music Centre
Opened, managed and finally closed a music centre located in Forest
Lake Village Shopping Centre. Apart from actually teaching around 40
students per week, I engaged up to 10 subcontract staff to teach
instrumental and vocal individual and group lessons to all levels and
developed and implemented appropriate teaching materials, business
strategies and community programs. Although the Centre had around
120
students at the end of 2004, I closed the business in early 2005 due in
part to unsustainably rising lease and staff costs, and in part to
personal and family reasons, including a growing conviction that the
business could not be made to accomplish what I had originally
envisioned for it, while staying afforadable to families.
2000-2002:
Freelance music therapist, teacher and performer (full-time)
Worked as a sessional music therapist at many venues including hospice,
hospital, aged-care facilities, disability support and private practice
environments. Also taught around 20 private piano and theory students.
1994-1999:
Freelance performer, accompanist, and teacher (part-time)
Worked as a freelance music teacher, accompanist for eisteddfoddeau,
exams and recitals. Main income came from accompanying a large number
(20+) of regular clients, and performing for events.
Education
1998-1999:
Masters in Performance Research at Queensland Conservatorium of Music,
Griffith University
Two years full time degree - thesis topic was a creative
synthesis of
the writings of Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji (English-Parsi composer of
monumental piano works in the twentieth century), while recital was a
recital of some of Sorabji's early works. Also included some editing of
his works from the original manuscripts. Studied piano with Mr Eugene
Gienger and thesis supervised by Dr Stephen Emmerson.
1998-1999: Postgraduate Diploma of Music Therapy at University of
Queensland
Two-year part-time diploma – (but actually involved much more work than
the Masters degree above!) - to attain status of Registered Music
Therapist. Involved work in many therapy related areas (non-musical)
and over 800 hours of practical internment in various music therapy
environments.
1994-1997:
Bachelor of Music Performance at Queensland Conservatorium of Music,
Griffith University
The specialized performance program which was offered by QCM at this
time. Studied piano with Stephen Savage. Graduated with Second Class
Honours, Division A. Attendence was funded by a $10 000 Griffith
University scholarship awarded in 1994.
1989-1993:
Secondary education at Ipswich Grammar School
Graduated with OP of 1 and received around 30 subject, citizenship and
general achievement prizes in that time. Attended on a full academic
scholarship awarded in 1988.
1982-1988:
Primary education at Bundamba State Primary School
